Care Tips

We love Giant Schnauzers and we've learned a lot about this big, adorable breed over the years. See below for breed characteristics, care tips, grooming tips, and a handy list of supplies/resources that we recommend.

About Giant Schnauzers:

In our experience, Giants are incredibly affectionate and are always ready for hugs and cuddling. This breed is not independent. They prefer to be with their people and by their people at all times. Although Giants are working dogs and need regular exercise, they also are not normally hyper. Our Giants are not overwhelmingly full of energy, and are content to be calmly laying beside us.

Socialization is Key:

We strongly believe that early interaction and socialization with other dogs and people is critical to raising a happy, healthy giant. Our dogs are at the park with dozens of other dogs and people every day from 12 weeks of age and on. We believe this frequent, social interaction makes them a perfect balance of friend and protector. Playing with other dogs is very important. That type of play is difficult to mimic, and is extremely healthy and stimulating for all dogs.

Set Boundaries Early:

The Giant Schnauzers breed is wonderful with children, they make amazing family dogs, but do require consistent and firm handling early on. We recommend setting boundaries immediately and they will be quickly received. Giant Schnauzers are very eager to please and easily trained. Make a list of what you expect of your mature dog before bringing the puppy version home. Just because they are adorable puppies does not mean you should let them chew on you, jump on you, or get on your furniture. Set your boundaries immediately, have a plan, and be consistent. It is your job to teach them what good behavior is.

Grooming Tips:
If you don’t want to take on grooming and clipping yourself, most experienced groomers are familiar with a classic schnauzer cut. If you like that particular look, expect to have this done every 6-8 weeks. An occasional bath and weekly, thorough brushing at home is all they really need in between grooming visits. The tools you use make a huge difference. We have a list of these recommended products below. Keep in mind that early implementation of grooming and handling is key! This will make yours, your groomers, and your pup's lives better! Most Giants love the extra attention they get when getting groomed. Our Giants love it so much they jump on the grooming table when they see us grab a brush.
